Loss and Grief

Sometimes we suffer losses in life, such as the death of someone we loved or the breakup of a relationship. Sometimes all we need to move on is to be able to experience our grief and process the loss. In therapy, discussing emotions related to the loss can be very beneficial. However, sometimes it is not so simple. For example, we may have grief over losses, but we may not feel safe expressing those emotions. So the grief may be avoided or blocked. If this is the case it may take some extra work in therapy to help experience and ultimately resolve grief. Something else to be aware of is that grief is rarely felt on its own; additional emotions may need to be experienced and processed if healing is to occur.
